Neighborhood Disputes

What is neighborhood mediation?

Neighborhood mediation can help neighbors resolve disputes quickly and peacefully, offering a safe and neutral space for open communication. Instead of escalating conflicts or involving the police, mediation allows neighbors to address concerns directly, clarify misunderstandings, and find practical solutions that work for everyone involved. This process not only avoids the financial and emotional cost of going to court but also helps preserve important community relationships, fostering cooperation and respect between neighbors

Steps in the Mediation Process

  1. Before mediation begins, RSCCM will request contact information for both parties, any attorneys involved, and relevant court documents.

  2. Each person will complete a confidential intake appointment (1–1.5 hours) that includes a domestic violence screening and assets and debts questionnaire.

  3. RSCCM will then contact the other party to confirm willingness to mediate, gather scheduling availability by email, and send a confirmation once a date is set.

All intake information is confidential and not shared with the other party.

Why Mediate a Neighborhood dispute?

Mediation is often faster, more cost-effective, and less stressful than going to court or involving law enforcement. This allows neighbors the opportunity to avoid escalating conflicts and the potential consequences of ongoing tension in their community.

Neighbors often share long-term proximity. Mediation helps preserve goodwill and foster mutual understanding, which can lead to healthier, more respectful relationships.

Mediation also provides a safe and structured space for neighbors to communicate more effectively by sharing their perspectives, clearing up misunderstandings, and working together to create practical agreements.
